“When the pandemic began, we nearly doubled our output overnight, and the need for healthy food access has continued to grow,” said Locker Project Executive Director Kathryn Sargent. “We’ve been looking for a larger space that we could afford that was also close to our partner schools in Portland, South Portland and Westbrook.”

We are moving! Our goal is to raise at least $60,000 this summer to cover the cost of the new cooler and moving our operations.

From the Maine Community Foundation: The Locker Project partners with more than 40 schools, preschools, childcare facilities, and other agencies in Cumberland County to connect children and their families with reliable access to nourishing foods. When school is out for the summer, Locker Project staff and volunteers host free, fresh food events at summer meals sites and other convenient locations across Greater Portland.

The Locker Project’s Kathryn Sargent, executive director, and Steve Phillips accept a contribution from Town & Country FCU’s Community Engagement Manager Linda Halleran. The contribution was one of seven the credit union made to hunger-related organizations in Cumberland and York Counties to provide meals to families and individuals in need during the holidays and beyond.

"Most of these kids would get lunch and often breakfast at school, but they might not have anything to eat in the evening, and weekends are a tough time, and then to be out of school for close to two weeks, when they will miss out on those school meals, we want to make sure there's food in the house," The Locker Project Executive Director Kathryn Sargent said.
