Summer Appeal

Dear friends and neighbors,

The Locker Project would like to thank you on behalf of the students and families of Cumberland and York counties who have benefited from your thoughtful support. We estimate that more than 1,500 food-insecure students and their families took home nourishing food this past school year.

The 2016-2017 school year was particularly busy for the Locker Project. Your support helped us manage 23 pantries in as many schools in Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, Falmouth, and Saco. We expanded our fresh produce distribution program to include several new schools and distributed literally tons of produce from partners including the Good Shepherd Food Bank, Shaw’s, Hannaford, the South Portland Food Cupboard as well as local farmers and community gardeners.

We were honored to receive the 2017 “Keeping It Fresh” award from the Good Shepherd Food Bank, our partner for 12 of our pantries. Good Shepherd recognized the Locker Project for our participation in Hannaford and Shaw’s Fresh Rescue program, and for creating over 24,000 healthy, nutritious meals from food that would otherwise have been discarded.

Through the generous support of donors, caring foundations, local businesses and corporate sponsorships, we distributed an estimated 20,000 additional meals consisting of fresh produce and dry goods to children in our non-partnering schools.

While our community has pulled together to accomplish a great deal, there’s still much work to do. This is an exciting time for the Locker Project as we expand to serve more food-insecure school children across Southern Maine, but we can’t do it without your support.

Will you help us reach our goal of raising $40,000? This is a large objective, but it’s one that will allow us to open six new pantries in schools on our waiting list, AND keep our existing pantries well stocked. Any amount helps our mission. You’d be surprised how far we can spread every dollar!
